Shirley Huntington, the HR Practice Director, is a holder of the Full Level B Certificate of Competence in Occupational Testing with the British Psychological Society. She is one of the few recognised by them as competent to give advice, guidance and supervision to others in the use of tests. With over twenty years of experience in the use of psychometrics within industry, she is skilled in choosing tests and setting up systems and procedures for their fair and ethical use in a variety of situations and for different applications.

What Is Psychometrics?
Psychometrics is all about measuring a person’s psychological attributes. There are two types of instrument – tests and questionnaires:
- Tests: These have right or wrong answers and are designed to measure a person’s ability or aptitude. They might be used to gauge someone’s verbal or numerical skills and are often used when a particular skill or aptitude is required to do a job such as good mental arithmetic. Tests measure “hard” skills
- Questionnaires: Here there are no right or wrong answers. Personality questionnaires consider someone’s characteristics or how they usually behave. Questionnaires measure “soft” skills.
Why Use Psychometrics?
Psychometrics should be used wherever there is a business need to assess individuals objectively. It can also be used as a catalyst for enhancing personal and team performance.
There are many psychometric tools from which to choose and it is vitally important that the instrument used is the right one to assess the areas of need. This is why it is essential that you are clear about exactly what it is you wish to measure and that you obtain expert advice on the correct tools to use.
Which Test For Which Purpose?
There are very many tests and questionnaires available and it is vitally important to choose the right instrument for the right purpose.
